Field Day Interview Eveleigh Workshops – Robert Wright

Australian Workers Film Guide

Summary

Produced by the Australian Technology Park in Sydney, this is an interview with former Eveleigh Workshop worker Robert Wright. Once the centre of rail assembly and maintenance in New South Wales, the Eveleigh Railway Workshops now form part of the Australian Technology Park.

Robert Wright dreamed of becoming a train driver, but began as a shop boy at Eveleigh, where he became an apprentice.  He recalls the workplace noise as 50 men worked with rivet guns, which ruined his ears.  Wright also reveals that he has spots on his lung from asbestos, which they used to mix up water and even throw it at each other. He worked at Eveleigh from 1949 to 1989 and recalls the picnics, which he helped to organise. Wright hasn’t forgotten the “bastard” bosses at Eveleigh and the Carriage Works.
